Overview

ParseForge

ESPN NHL Scoreboard Scraper

Scrape NHL scoreboard data from ESPN's public API, up to a million games per run. Get live scores, game status, team details, and venue information for any date or full season. Export to CSV, JSON, Excel, or XML.

ESPN's NHL scoreboard holds the league's live scores, schedules, and game results, but pulling it into your own tools means building a connector. This Actor reads ESPN's public scoreboard API directly, returning every game for a date or an entire season in one flat dataset. No browser, no API key, no manual copying.

Who uses it What they scrape ESPN for
Sports data analysts Build historical NHL datasets for trend analysis and modeling.
Hockey bloggers and journalists Pull live scores and schedules to power game-day content.
Fantasy hockey developers Feed real-time NHL scores and game status into fantasy apps.
Betting modelers Collect game results and scores to back-test betting strategies.

What it does

This Actor collects NHL game data from the ESPN scoreboard API and returns each game as a structured row with scores, status, teams, and venue details.

  • ๐Ÿ“… Date or season filtering: target a single date in YYYYMMDD format or pull every game from an entire NHL season.
  • โšก Direct API access: reads ESPN's public scoreboard endpoint, so data arrives fast with no browser overhead.
  • ๐Ÿ“Š Flat row output: each game lands as one row, ready for spreadsheets, databases, or downstream scripts.

Results export to CSV, JSON, Excel, or XML, or straight from the API.

What you can do with ESPN data

๐Ÿ“ˆ Build a historical NHL database.

A data analyst sets the season year to 2023 and maxItems to 1000000, collecting every game from that season for trend analysis.

๐Ÿ“ฐ Power a hockey news site.

A blogger runs the Actor each morning with the current date to pull last night's NHL scores and game statuses for a daily recap.

๐Ÿ’ Feed a fantasy hockey dashboard.

A developer schedules the Actor to run every five minutes during game nights, piping live scores into a fantasy league's scoring engine.

๐Ÿ’ฐ Back-test NHL betting models.

A bettor pulls five seasons of game results, joining scores with historical odds to evaluate a model's accuracy.

Then prompt it in plain language to run the scraper and read back the results.

Troubleshooting

Why am I getting no results for a date?

Check that the date is in YYYYMMDD format and that NHL games occurred on that date. Off-season dates or dates with no scheduled games will return an empty dataset.

Why did my run stop at 10 games?

Free Apify users are limited to 10 games as a preview. Upgrade to a paid plan to collect up to 1,000,000 games per run.

The season year I entered returned the wrong season.

ESPN labels seasons by the year they start. Enter 2023 for the 2023-24 season. If results look off, try the previous calendar year.

I got an error about the date format.

The date input must be exactly eight digits in YYYYMMDD format with no hyphens or slashes. For example, use 20240115, not 2024-01-15.

My run is taking too long for a full season.

A full NHL season contains about 1,300 games. Set maxItems to a reasonable number and ensure you are on a paid plan. The Actor calls the API directly, so network latency to ESPN is the main factor.

FAQ

Question Answer
Does this Actor need an ESPN API key? No. It reads ESPN's public scoreboard API, which does not require authentication or an API key.
Can I get live in-game scores? Yes. The Actor returns the current score and game status for in-progress games when you run it during a game window.
How do I pull an entire NHL season? Set the season year input to the desired season (e.g., 2023 for the 2023-24 season) and maxItems high enough to capture all games.
What date format does the Actor expect? Use YYYYMMDD format. For example, 20240115 for January 15, 2024.
Does this cover playoffs? Yes. The ESPN scoreboard includes regular season and playoff games for the specified season or date.
What data fields come back per game? Each row includes the home and away teams, their scores, game status, period, venue name, and game date.
Can I filter by a specific team? The Actor pulls the full scoreboard for a date or season. You can filter by team in your downstream processing after the run.
Is there a limit on how many games I can pull? Free users are limited to 10 games as a preview. Paid Apify users can collect up to 1,000,000 games per run.
Does this Actor use a browser? No. It calls ESPN's API endpoints directly, so it runs fast and uses fewer platform resources.
Can I schedule this to run automatically? Yes. Use Apify's scheduler to run the Actor on a cron schedule, such as every five minutes during game nights.
